8/28/11: news from the garden

It’s finally hot and dry in Tacoma, and I’m watering every day now. The Swiss chard has been coming in for weeks, grows lovely new leaves every time I top off the seed tops.  The cucumbers blossomed but I don’t think they are going to put out. The peppers never germinated at all. There is a lovely volunteer head of leafy lettuce that will make one large salad and a few volunteer kale from another season. The red basil is struggling along, I will probably pot it in a few weeks and bring it indoors to a sunny window. The surprise is the neighbor-cat coming over to drink water from my leaky hose. The big news is the tomatoes are bursting out all over!
